Fatherland

Back in mid-2006 my friend Ian unearthed a Hi8 tape from his archive, one that had been recorded on our road trip up the US east coast into Canada and back, in 1999. On one of the stops we stayed in eastern PA at Ian’s father’s house, and took a side trip into NY, to visit the area where we both grew up. We visited the Quaker meeting house in Chappaqua, which has a cemetery adjoined to it, where my father is buried. This piece, made in 2007, is inspired by the recording made there, of the environment, the atmosphere, and how we made our journey through it to find my father’s grave.

This was remixed in 2008 at the Experimental Television Center, and made into an installation for my show Hidden States in 2013.
